Welcome back to the blog!

Dear Families and Friends,

So far these two days, we have been working on comparing numbers in math and creating a title page explaining about Canada. We have also finished doing our activity stations in gym. In Social studies we are learning about natural disasters  and also we watched about Haiti's earthquake and lesson saves life's

We are learning about French Canadian  culture and making a title  page about it.We will have a test  tomorrow on numbers, days of the week, and months of the year.

On September the 20th, we got the new Surface RT tablets with the key board and they are awesome!!
We used them for alot of things such as Evernote. In Evernote, we all created a notebook to write in and send our homework to Mrs.Pike. Ask your child to login from home and show you their work.

In gym, we have finally finished our fitness journal. Every day 3 we did  gym with Mrs .Pierce's class and every day 5 we did it with our class. This week we had collected $2 from our classmates for gym because theres a professional trainer coming to Northwood for a work out and that will be happening on 09/26/13.

Dear families,
You are reading back from us: students of 6PIKE. Each Tribe is taking a turn writing our blog post, this week it is the 6 Minions.
This week we have been writing our own speed week sentences and have been learning about personal health. We have been starting to understand our 4 tribe agreement: Attentive Listening, Mutual Respect, Appreciations No Put-Downs, Right to pass, by creating posters amongst our tribes. We recently created our tribe names and posters. We have conducted an iSearch on famous mathematicians and scientists. In art we have drawn and learned about the 7 elements of design and 1 principle of design. We are applying what we learned to decorate our art portfolios. Come back at a later date to see photos!
In French we have done small quizzes on the days of the week (les jours) and the months of the year (les mois de l'annee) and have been preparing for our up-coming French test next week.
Come back next week and hear what’s up in 6PIKE!
Thank you for reading,
The 6 Minions Tribe

Wow, it was hot!

It was so hot on Thursday we had to take a break in the Cooling Station, aka the air conditioned gym!

Math Mania

We opened our math kit and shared what we know about using manipulatives to improve our learning. Students use the iPad and Apple TV to present their group work.

What's happening so far?

We had a guest (my daughter Courtney) bring in photos of her Bearded Dragon. The students had lots of questions about what having a reptile pet is like. Maybe one day Marvel will be able to come for a visit himself!

Friday the 13th - Dun dun dun

Today we shared appreciations for::
  • people who helped us with writing ideas
  • tribe members who helped each other stay on task
  • some students just appreciated being in the class and not having to move like some other classes
  • friends working together to make cards for Mr. Carter (our custodian of 14 years has left our school to work at Central)
  • and for friends who shared books with others.

In Art, we learned about the 7 elements of design. We are going to learn about the art principle called balance this year.
In health and phys. ed., we started finding out our heart rate and monitoring our fitness. We are doing fitness stations, like bean bag relay and standing long jump.
In all of our subjects, we are thinking more about fairness and we read Mr. Peabody's Apples by Madonna. We also talked about our digital footprints and how to be careful what we put on the internet.

In French, we are reviewing and practising numbers, days of the week and months of the year.

Next week we are going to read The Dot! Come back to find out what we did with the book.

The students of grade 6Pike :)

Friday, September 6, 2013

Dear Families, welcome to our grade 6 blog. This is the students of 6Pike blogging here. We will be telling you about what we are learning each week in our class. We had a great first week of school and have a very awesome and fun teacher! For the past week, we have been using technology to present our work in Math and our Me in a Bag using: iPad, Apple TV, laptop, and a data projector. We also used the clicker in a "get to know you" activity on the very first day.

We started to explore our Math kits and had different roles. We shared the use of each manipulative and presented using iPads. We discovered interesting facts like how callipers are used for measuring. We have been doing multiple activities to get to know each other and ourselves for example our own "Facebook" profile (on paper only!).
Come back next week, to read about how we are organizing our classroom library and see what else we are up to!
